Cartridges were the rule of the land in video games, and the use of compact discs for games were introduced under the premise of vastly improved sound quality, a larger storage capacity meaning bigger, longer adventures, and especially exhilarating cinematic experiences. The Sega Mega CD and TurboGrafx-CD made it to the market first but, the 3DO would embrace this CD technology in its goal to be the most powerful machine on the market.

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Here's a little background since I don't feel like writing that much about it tonight. In the summer of 1993 Panasonic showcased its then-state-of-the-art 3DO video game console to the public at the Consumer Electronic Show in Chicago, Illinois. At the mist of the show, Trip Hawkins, founder and president of Electronic Arts, The 3DO Company, a<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">nd later Digital Chocolate in 2003, present the finalized specifications and printed circuit board to a formally dressed audience full of press members and industry insiders.
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">The general public was excited of the console, but probably until they learned of the morbidly-high $699.99 price tag (that's about $1,221 in 2018 dollars, folks) that would bar anyone who didn't want to break the bank from making the investment. Following the event, a marketing VHS was sent out to licensees to cover the well-received press conference and to persuade them of the potential the console had. Along with a complimentary hand-signed letter by company president himself, which can be found below or after the jump, the VHS tape featured four segments (including a complete version at 60FPS that I've recently uploaded! 1/11/2024 Edit: Here's an Internet Archive link to the entire upload with everything and no bullshit watermarks on them. =)):

Lots of strange, obnoxious FMV games, cheesy, early 90's butt-rock and mediocre CGI, and a monotone emotionless narration by two voice narrators that would bore anyone to sleep. At least, the 3DO port of Dragon's Lair looked nice high-res for its time, right...? Nah, I wouldn't know.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We also see a preliminary version of the standard PlayStation controller featuring odd symbols on the shoulder buttons that would later become the numbered R and L buttons.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's rather interesting to see this game unveiled to the gaming public about a year and a half before either the game and console came out. It's thanks to this fact however that we can actually see the early designs for the PlayStation controller. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As it is known, the original PlayStation controller went through several dozen iterations before the company settled on its finalized design. The m<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ost striking detail seen in are the shoulder button designs on the top of the controller. There are no L or R labeled buttons but instead are some triangle-shaped symbols that I can't make out what they're supposed to be.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Obviously, the controller wasn't finalized at this point in time but it makes clear that Sony Computer Entertainment had provided a 3D console that enabled third-party developers like Konami the confidence they needed to jump onto polygons so soon. Sony lured them into their boat <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">quite well<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">.

I have a bad work ethic for blogs and videos. Tonight, l<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">et's talk about a Superman game. One that was made for PlayStation.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center;">After the complete bomb that was the abysmal <i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">Superman <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center;">on the Nintendo 64 in 1999, another attempt by the same developer was made for the PlayStation just a year later.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Long story short, publisher Titus lost the video game license to Superman and thus the game could not be sold without renewing the expensive license. The game was subsequently cancelled afterwards. Since then, it's become a legend among some game prototype enthusiasts for being a completely different game than the original N64 game. The following is screen-recorded footage of the unreleased PlayStation version running on ePSXe, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">retrieved from an anonymous source (intentionally withheld for the time being), and I've been privileged to upload it all on YouTube with his/her blessing.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An embedded playlist of the footage divided in three short parts. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Unfortunately the footage contained absolutely no sound, therefore the audio heard in the first part plays the opening intro theme repeatedly, while later parts just use music from some of the PlayStation Mega Man games. =POKeijiDragonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08730604118342212926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779779496041480669.post-21561994547841019162016-06-13T17:45:00.005-07:002016-06-13T17:49:57.980-07:00More VHS crap few would care about (or stuff I find at work in Goodwill)<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wowsers! It's been months since the last update? Let me rev it up here. I've been working at my job at Goodwill for months now and I've been finding some unexpectedly awesome things there since my time there. The following post is not of that level of such but it might be a nice thing for some.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I found a home video tape buried with other crap <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">inside a gaylord<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> that nobody would care about. This one was labeled "<i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">DBZ + Adult Swim<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">" in fine-point blue ink on an expectedly worn, generic white label. Out of curiosity, I fired up a recovered VHS player in the item processing area I work in (I'm a "production associate"), popped the tape in, it wasn't what I expected. Lacking the time and luxury to watch all two hours of the tape (time is money and I'm not paid to do that), I decided to chance buying it to watch what I thought would be some Dragon Ball Z goodness. So the next day, I slipped the bastard in a Tomorrow Never Dies VHS box cover, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">bought it for<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> $0.99 and went home.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I popped the thing into my Panasonic player. It wasn't DBZ or anything Adult Swim related. In fact, apparently what did actually exist on it was three seconds of Inuyasha at the start of the tape and suddenly there's a really boring, over-glorified TV show ─ from<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> fucking <b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">G4 <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">of all things <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">─ about race cars and their douchebag drivers; presumably recording over what was labeled on the tape. Yeah, remember G4? That one channel were Icons aired on and all those bullshit EB Games ads that aired every 15 minutes, and later a bunch of other shows aired that weren't even video game related? Yeah, that channel. They sucked. Just like this tape I blew 99 cents on. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What didn't suck though was seeing TV commercials of certain games that I didn't see archived in decent-enough resolution online.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
One was for the 2005 Xbox port of the high-profile, smash-hit Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which by the time this particular commercial aired, the Hot Coffee scandal had just hit public consciousness, inducing lots of congressional shit that era and giving owners of the original release something to giggle about. It's a hot read.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="330" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ATEENx0dZ3A" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" width="440">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Another was Psychonauts, a fan-favorite game released that same year for every major platform minus the Nintendo GameCube, just like so many multiplatform-bounded games that era. GCN missed out on a lot of good games. Believe it or not, I haven't even touched this game once. Heard about it throughout the years, but I haven't cared to try it. However, the long awaited sequel was recently announced and I know what it's like to have a favorite game series return after a decade-long absence, so here's my unsolicited gift to those fans. I just hope their game doesn't end up in smoke like mine did.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So there you have it, maybe I'll have more articles and YouTube stuff to put up soon. I've got a lot to catch up on so stay tuned.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yikes, it's that game.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sonic Boom was a catastrophic failure of a game that no one wanted, expected or cared about. As we all know, the damage made to the brand after having it being partially restored to greatness by Sonic Generations (and brought down again by Sonic Lost World) has arguably been done worse than 2006's abysmal Sonic The Hedgehog. A feat that many didn't think was even actually possible, yet it did. Lone wolf game investigator Tamaki has a terrific video of the whole situation over at his YouTube channel.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Japanese weren't spared of this game either and from the looks of it, they received it better than the rest of the western hemisphere did, at least under Famitsu's reviewers (this was the same magazine that gave the original Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> a soaring score of 38/40<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, Sonic '06 a 30/40<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, and Generation<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">s a 35/40<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">), so take their credibility with a grain of salt.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So I bought this magazine at a Japanese bookstore in San Francisco's Japantown about a year and a half ago. At first, it was about seeing what cool stuff I'd find about Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS but then I stumbled upon an article about Boom. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Page 232 of <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Weekly Famitsu Issue #1345<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">is <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the article about Sonic Boom. If the language itself won't do anyone any favors, then surely the images - and the characters, Metal Sonic and Shadow (at least his katakana-written name) - may.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It always seemed as though the pre-release material made the game looked
better than it did (but then, that's almost always been the case for video games).
Watching that Game Grumps series has made me realize that.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Higher resolution scan can be found and downloaded here.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's really too bad at this game ended up the way that it did. I knew that this was a spinoff but I thought it was going to have something rather interesting environmental art style going for it. This game was being made by a developer who formally worked on the Crash Bandicoot series under Naughty Dog so with such credentials it's actually disappointing this project resulted in the mess that was but for all I know, it may have just been a case of publisher-interference on Sega's part. That's never a good thing.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Software porting has always been a thing in digital entertainment. Seeing a game originally released in one, single system would oftentimes be on another in a year's time. That was especially true in the 32-bit era and before it. These days, nobody wants to deal with old stuff from a year before and publishers, who hold the keys to the game's IP, are particularly privy to that and so you see console ports of the same game across different platforms on the same day.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mega Man Legends was absolutely no exception to the former, but I'm guessing it was more Capcom wanting to recuperate some of the costs of the original game, since it wasn't the huge commercial success that they wanted. The effort put forth onto this port wasn't stellar either. Last month, me and a couple friends of mine released an early prototype of Mega Man 64 online to some fanfare for Legends enthusiasts like myself.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Okay so, Mega Man 64. It was sloppily ported. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In addition to the reasons I've explained earlier, I wasn't that particularly interested in this build because this would have represented the point in time Legends was being ported to the N64. It wasn't until this collector had posted a video of the prototype in action on YouTube that it finally piqued my interest.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Under the pseudonym V. Tomozo, as it was Capcom's policy to obscure talents' names back then, Makoto Tomozawa became well-known for composing music for several of the more popular early titles in the Mega Man franchise, including Mega Man X and Mega Man 7 for Super Nintendo (while also supposedly lending a hand in Dr. Wily's Revenge for Game Boy). He would later be best known for his work in the two main Mega Man Legends entries years later.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He continued to be credited under the pseudonym until Resident Evil in 1996, when 3D polygonal games were becoming the norm and the talent it took being more valued and recognized. Tomozawa would work briefly on the first draft of Resident Evil 2 (Resident Evil 1.5) right until it was scrapped. As soon as that game entered redevelopment in 1997, Tomozawa would be reassigned to compose music for Mega Man Legends, the first major 3D Mega Man game for PlayStation.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">His other work consisted of titles from other well-known Capcom properties, including the Dino Crisis series on PlayStation. Tomozawa returned to the Resident Evil franchise one last time as a co-composer for the remake in 2002. One year later, after the release of P. N. 03, he left the company to join the Dimps Corporation and work on the highly-celebrated Street Fighter IV. In 2010 he would reunite with the Blue Bomber in Mega Man 10, composing Strike Man's stage theme.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Around the time of the Mega Man Legends 3 cancellation catastrophe in summer of 2011, I had a chat with Makoto Tomozawa on Twitter. Being the huge fan of the Legends series and some of the Resident Evil games in particular, I wanted the opportunity to speak with him about his past years at Capcom. He gladly accepted and over a period of months, he and I replied back and forth in an on-and-off manner to the point where he unfortunately dropped out on the middle of Legends 1 portion of our chat.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But from what I did gather, he didn't hesitate to admit that the Mega Man Legends projects were among the higher points of his time at Capcom.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What kinds of ideas did you had when making the Mega Man X soundtrack? Also, which tracks did you compose for that game?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Sorry, I forget what I thought because it was also 15 years ago. And I composed Storm Eagleed and Spark Mandriller.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I bought Mega Man X for Virtual Console of Wii last week.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Oh nice. How was it for you? I have not played it in years. (laughs) Did you also compose the Stage Select theme?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think stage select was not my work. Mega Man X is too difficult for me now, hahaha.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I asked about the Stage Select theme in Rockman X1, because to me it sounds very similar to a certain music theme in Rockman DASH 2.If I may show to you, this MMX1 [Stage Select] theme sounds like [Glyde's Base] in DASH2.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Glyde's Base was my work, but the Stage Select [theme] was not mine.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see. It was an interesting resemblance, however. Did you continue to work on the X series after X1?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: No, that was my first and last title of X series.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Did you work on the Mega Man X3 PlayStation version, however? The soundtrack CD says you worked on it.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: OK. So what did you work on before BioHazard (editor's note: Resident Evil is known as BioHazard in Japan)?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I just studied English only in school, so just like most of Japanese. I can write or read a little but can't speak or hear.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: By the way, you worked on the PlayStation version of [Mega Man] X3 while working on Bio Hazard correct, based on the release dates?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Yes. I only composed [the] OP movie's BGM [for the] overseas version.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: OK! <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: It is case by case.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What do you mean?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That makes sense. How often would you get in touch with other team members at Capcom when working on projects? Did you knew a lot of people?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: On projects, we have to get in touch with members everyday. I knew project team members only.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: How about Keiji Inafune, the co-creator of Rockman?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I have not spoken with him.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Oh, OK then.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: So after Mega Man 7, you started on Resident Evil, right? How was that project for you, considering that you were working with 3D graphics at the time? 3D was a new thing back in the mid-90s.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: First, obstacle was that PS was newest hardware, so nobody had [the] know-how, especially about 3D. Sound... Graphic... Program...
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What about you and the sound hardware? What sorts of limitations or challenges did you encounter working on PS1 compared to the SNES?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: When did you start working on Resident Evil and the PS1 hardware?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Sorry, this is the time to go to LiveShow! Bye!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: OK, see you when you get back. Enjoy the show!
It has come to my attention that a Rockman 7 work-in-progress build has surfaced in the internet (editor's note: I assumed the role of being uninformed just to bring this question.) Fans and hackers have found this unused music track in the prototype's sound code (Editor's note: to your right). Do you recall its purpose?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I just can't recall this tune at once, but I think there is a possibility that this music was what I made.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Can you still somewhat recall what it might have been used for?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I'm very sorry, but I can recall nothing about this music...
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(I repeat my question about his thoughts on the PS1's sound hardware when composing for Resident Evil.)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What about you and the sound hardware? What sorts of limitations or challenges did you encounter working on PS1 compared to the SNES?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I thought that PS1's degree of freedom in sound was so higher than SNES. Memory, simultaneous number of pronunciations...
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Did you compose what you envisioned for in BioHazard 1 with the degree of freedom in sound you had?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I was music director on that title, so I could construct sounds as like I assumed, when saying accurately.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Did you enjoy the horror scenario [for Bio Hazard]? It seems some of the game's makers, besides Mikami-san, did not, based on some comments. (laughs)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I don't like horror movies, so... it leaves it to the imagination.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What sort of directions did the director gave you in composing the music for [the first Bio Hazard game]? Do you recall if everything you composed was used?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: There were two policies that I had on that title. One was "Just [like] movies," and the other was "[silence] is important sound."
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I composed so many music so I can't recall all of it.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see. Do you have particular favorite in that game?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I can't choose because all of titles and tunes are just like my children. I love them all.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Ah, I definitely understand that.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I noticed that there are always environmental and atmosphere sounds in your music for games like Bio Hazard, and Mega Man Legends.For example, the Guardhouse B1 theme, the Crow Room Theme and my favorite, the Save Room theme. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: But let's get into DASH series later! I would like to go back to Resident Evil. =)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Mr. Tomozawa, this ending theme song (Still Dawn) for RE1 is among my favorites. Do you recall who composed it?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I composed and played guitars on that tune.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I love it because it has the feeling of "Congratulations! You deserve peace, and this positive song!" I know there is a complete remix version of Still Dawn, but do you have a full version of Still Dawn as you hear it from the game? Still Dawn in the PS version ends at a certain point. I would love to hear the full version of it, if it exists!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: PS's version was complete one when I composed. Soundtrack's version is [the alternate] take for CD.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: So there is no longer version of Still Dawn (PS version)?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: CD version is little bit longer, but no other takes exists.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Oh, that's too bad. Do you often keep what you compose? Or do all music project assets stay at the companies?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: All rights are reserved by company, so I have only CDs on the market.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Ahh, I see. How do you feel about this, especially on games that do not have a CD release?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I don't care about it because I think Game Music don't consist without its own games. It's just a part of commodity.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That's true. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I'm sorry, but I don't know about that song's rights.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Oh, I just don't know about these rights. (editor's note: a re-reply to my tweet?)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: My next question about Bio Hazard is the Japanese theme song, Yume De Owarasenai by Fumitaka Fuchigami. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: No, no. To our regret, I am not related to it at all.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Could you tell me what this regret is that you are talking about, if you don't mind?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Well, I use "regret" for that I don't know about this song.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Oh I see then, never mind.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: One last question, do you recall that Bio Hazard originally featured Japanese voice acting at one point?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Tomozawa: I can't recall about those words accurately, but I think voices of in-game are not [the] formal ones. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Do you recall the name of the company? I ask because there are lot of American fans who are interested about who the English and Japanese voice actors in Bio Hazard 1 were.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: As you know, voice actors' names [do] not appear on cast roll, because there was no information about actors. We didn't know too. We knew only their first name.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That's very interesting. That explains a lot actually.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Old times are broad-minded ages.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I enjoy reading about this history because it gives us a window of how different those times were compared to the industry today. =)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Mr. Tomozawa, I would like to ask about your role in BioHazard 2.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I have recently learned about your involvement with the prototype version of BioHazard 2 through other staff members here on Twitter. Certain staff members have stated that you composed music for BioHazard 2 before working on Mega Man Legends in 1997. However, your work was ultimately not featured in the final product. [Just as well,] your name is listed under Sound Cooperate on the BioHazard 2 staff roll. I bring this particular subject up because BioHazard 1.5 (as the prototype version of BIO2 is known) is quite popular. It is infamous for being the original version of BioHazard 2 before it's development was restarted in 1997. If you do not understand what I am talking, perhaps this video will help you (below):

How involved were you in this project before it was redesigned in 1997?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think that Biohazard 1.5 project began as soon as [the] Bio Hazard 1 project finished.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: The director of BIO1.5 & BIO2 was Hideki Kamiya. If you can recall, what was the difference between him and Mikami-san as directors?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: [That is a] very difficult question. Mr. Mikami was, so to say, "Old Belle Époque" type. Kamiya was new generation type. (editor's note: Tomozawa refers to the Mikami's seniority over Kamiya having just joined Capcom in 1994. Resident Evil was Kamiya's first project.)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Do you recall what kind of game Biohazard 1.5 was going to be like?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: That project had stopped before establishing its own form or world.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: In your observation, how far did the project go before it stopped?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: It was only entrance.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Could you rephrase that please, I did not quite understand that?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Well, BH1.5 was stopped very beginning [of development].
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see, what was your role in BH1.5? How much of the staff from BH1 worked on this game as well?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I'm sorry, but I do not remember those days' circumstances. Old times pass.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What is that made Kamiya-san stand out at the time? I'd like to know about his quality as a director at the time.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Yes, he showed us his talent in those days, but it was realistically clarified on DMC (editor's note: Not that DmC).
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Did the staff had a clear vision of what BH1.5 was going to be? Restarting development implies that it did not in my observation.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: The composer who had been influenced at time when I was developing Dino Crisis was recalled. Though it is not its taking the place.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Hmm... I'm afraid I do not understand this tweet, Mr. Tomozawa. Are you saying there is a connection between BH1.5 & Dino Crisis?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: No, it is another topic about Dino Crisis.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Oh OK, my mistake. In that case, it seems that Capcom would reassign people to another project, mid-way in a game's development like BIO2 and DMC.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Come to think of it, how much of the staff from BH1 would work on 1.5? And how much would stay for the final version of BH2?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Because those questions might collide with the obligation to keep secrets, it is not answered. I'm sorry.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I seemed to have stepped the boundary then.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I'm sorry, but it's hard to answer about company.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Could I ask what was your role was for BH1.5, and who else worked on it then? If I recall, Hideaki Utsumi was the sub-sound designer.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I was a composer, and I forget who was work on it except of Utsumi and Masami Ueda. Ueda was main composer of BioHazard 2.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Do you recall if [Resident Evil 2 composers] Shusaku Uchiyama and Shun Nishigaki were on the 1.5 project at all, or were they added later for BH2?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I can't recall, I'm sorry.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: This theme on a promotional video for BH1.5 sounded an awful lot like something from DASH1. As a matter of fact, to me, it is that particular music piece that gave you away. Do you remember what themes you composed for BH1.5?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I do not have the memory of it at all. I think this tune seems Ueda's work because of the tone used. However, there is no positive proof at all.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I understand. I suspected that track because it had a strong use of drums, and I had a good feeling. =)I actually have two tracks from BH1.5 that I'm not sure if they belong to Ueda-san, or you, or not. Allow me some time to prepare. =)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(I whip up two videos from my own YouTube account)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Can you recognize the scenario and music of BH1.5 featured in these videos:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: These musics has the memory that I composed though it cannot have the positive proof.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see then. What were your feelings of the game restarting it's development all over again? I assume it must have been hard to deal.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think that it was a trial that should exceed it to make up the better one though it thought a little regrettably. I think that all staff of guesswork felt it so.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Do you recall the reasons why the game was restarted? There has been evidence that it was far enough in development, to be playable.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Because it was not BioHazard Quality.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Could you elaborate please? What was wrong with it?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Everything! Even if development is advanced as it is, it doesn't reach the requested quality. Then, we threw everything away in the garbage box.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: LOL I see the point! So even before Biohazard 2 was released, everything was trashed [by the time the game was restarted]? Wow.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think that only Leon's basic setting remains.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I know this is quite far-fetched, but can you recall the planned ending to the game? The story leading to the end is not well-known.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think the story was made until ending, but the content has been forgotten.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That's too bad. A staff member once said that the RE1.5 ending held a special meaning that was omitted from the final version. Can you remember when you finished or stopped work on BH1.5 before moving on to your next work? How much of the music was done?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(I receive no immediate reply from him after a couple of days, from here he would start to reply sporadically. I reply to his last tweet again in case he didn't get my reply.)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see. Do you know of anyone that might have this information on Twitter?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Sorry, I don't know.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see then. Let's move on to Rockman DASH. =)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Rockman DASH was originally named "<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Rockman Neo." <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When was the first time you heard of the project?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Sorry, but I can't recall. Some projects progress concurrently, so I cannot specify time.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I understand. When Rockman DASH was being made, what sort of vision did the development team had for Rockman in 3D polygon graphics?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Well, I'm not graphic designer so I don't know about graphics.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Not really what I meant, but no matter. (editor's note: I was on to something, but I guess I... slipped?)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: How did you felt making music on a 3D Rockman game compared to the 2D Rockman work you had done on SNES?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I thought that Mega Man Legends was not the title of Mega Man series (editor's note: Figuratively speaking, he means), so I didn't compare them.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see. So in that case, it was a whole new Mega Man to you?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Yes. At first, I tried to compose the main theme of [MegaMan] Volnutt, but I was not able to compose [it] well because he was too featureless.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That is very interesting to me Mr. Tomozawa, because DASH1 went through a lot of audio and visual changes in its development.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: So you had a main theme for Volnutt planned for Legends 1, but did not make it to the final product?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I didn't compose it till the end, but you know that I composed the Bonne family's theme instead of it.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What do you mean by "instead of it"?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I composed the theme of Bonne instead of Volnutt's one.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: How long would it usually take for you to complete a song in Mega Man Legends 1 & 2?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think that I composed 3 or 4 tunes by day.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Was the process of making music different than when you composed music for MMX1 and MM7? If so, how?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: What is MMX1 and MM7?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Mega Man X1 and Mega Man 7. I shortened them for simplicity. Twitter does not allow for long written sentences. =)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I see. MM7 was just like Mega Man sounds. MMX1 was "intenser" sound, but [it was] easier for me [to compose].
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see. So how would you describe Mega Man Legends? =)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: There was no restriction in MML 1&2, so I composed what I wanted to do.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: This may be an unusual point to make, but there are a lot of fans of unused and removed content in video games, myself included. The point of the interest, in my observation, is preservation. We like documenting these things to understand how our favorite video games were developed, what sorts of development stages and changes they went through to get to the game market [etc.]. It is a very interesting subject, for us fans. That being said, it may be redundant to ask this, but was there anything in particular that you remember composing music [for] that did not make it to the final products of Mega Man Legends 1 and 2?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I'm sorry, but I wrote 300 or more music [pieces] for this title, so I can't recall everything.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Do you mean to say 300 music for just the first game? That is lot of music.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I have to decide the music on [a] brand-new title, so [the amount of music created] must increase.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(ClevelandRock steps in and asks Tomozawa away.)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ClevelandRock: I always thought of this as Volnutt's main theme. What do you think?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Hello, [ClevelandRock]. But I did not have such an intention.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Can you recall any difficulties when you composed music for Rockman DASH? Did you had any ambitions for the game as well?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I could compose freely on that title, so [the] difficulty was that I increase the number of music. And my ambition was [that] I made all [the game’s] music.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I see, point taken. DASH 1 contains a lot of classical pieces, some from actual musical artists like Johann Sebastian Bach. Why did you decide on that genre?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: Because the chance to touch the classical music was few, children in Japan thought that they only had to become chances.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: By the way, the composer of my favorite classics is [PyotrIlyich] Tchaikovsky.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: Ah nice! Do you recall what themes of his that inspired you for the game?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I think there [wasn’t any] music [that I was] inspired [by] directly, but I think that I used “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker. (editor's note: He did. In Mega Man Legends, it's the theme music for the Balloon Fantasy shooting mini-game inside the KTOX TV Station. =))
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: I meant to say Johann Sebastian Bach. Why did you feel that Little Fugue In G Minor was a good choice for Juno?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: [The] Staff Roll BGM was composed after the Japanese version was finished.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(I've asked Tomozawa-san about any possible reasons as to why Mega Man Legends was released in a much later period of time than most localized Mega Man titles. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I just [don't] know [anything] about English version's release timing.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: That's alright. I am curious about the English Staff Roll song. What was your idea of inserting English voice pieces into the song?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: I wanted to put out the recollection feeling by ending.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: When Rockman DASH was first released in Japan, how confident were you, the development team, and Capcom, of the game's success there?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomozawa: There are two sides in the success in the game development. It is a commercial success, and a success in customer's satisfaction rating. Customer's satisfaction rating is more important than a commercial success as the developer. In such a meaning, we thought that we would succeed enough.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Arron: What was the reality of that, however?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the end of the interview. We've certainly learned a lot of informative bits about his earlier work at Capcom, including his Mega Man and Resident Evil work, and it would have been more awesome to learn more about his later work. Unfortunately, Mr. Tomozawa had not been available to resume the interview since our last conversation.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While l await for the one day where I can resume my interview, I would like to sincerely thank Cleveland Rock for his participation in this interview, Protodude for sharing/reporting the interview when it published originally in 2012, and of course, Mr. Makoto Tomozawa (his account appears to been suspended (!) as of this time) for accepting and I wish him all the best in his game music career for years to come.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I hope you get to enjoy this as much as I did having the pleasure speaking with him! I'll have another interview I did with a another certain music composer up sometime in the near future.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Everyone making quality videos on YouTube needs to have a splash page about them. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They need to address viewers' questions like, who are you? What do you have to offer? Why should I care about the trivia you're spouting to me? Well, that last part is your prerogative but let me explain for a bit. If you've read what's on my blog here, you'll get a taste of what I'm gonna post on YT. In fact, if you've really been paying attention you'll notice the two actually go hand-in-hand. Hey, I gotta do something on the side besides my full-time job you know.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But that doesn't mean I'm just gonna throw something together, throw my hands up and say F*** everybody, I'm giving you guys quality videos of annotated game playthroughs (because I hate any LP commentary that isn't Game Grumps) in 1080p60, archived digitized VHS/LD videos (also in 1080p60, I've got a big back catalogue of such media that I'm looking back into to represent them in the best possible quality for archival), prototype coverages (OK, just playthroughs of certain game prototypes, oftentimes me doing YT-poop style ones. You'll see my highlights on the splash video), information videos about certain subjects in certain games (usually my favorites like Mega Man Legends and Resident Evil, to name a few), some glitch videos, and of course I aspire to do more from those subjects.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So without further ado, here's my brand new, mint-chocolate chip backgrounded splash video.

Here's to a good start in 2016, too. I'm gonna make it my new years resolution to be more dedicated to this blog in the following year than I have been all this year. Can my infinitesimal audience help me drive myself to that resolution?

Because either I kept forgetting or I just stopped caring, but tonight I'll just shut up and provide you with a 30-minute loop sales video for Resident Evil 2, recorded in 60 frames per second and upscaled to 1080p HD.

Dated November 16, 1997 (so it says on the front label), the footage seen here presumably comes from the fan-called "BETA 2" build that was burned around the time this sales video was sent out to retailers. The familiar, iconic Resident Evil 1.5 trailer theme plays throughout the loop, and it contains some differences from the final version (one thing comes in mind is the unused bear taxidermy in Chief Irons' creepy torture dungeon).

As I had mentioned earlier this year on my Capcom 2000 VHS video article, this is the second of three tapes I purchased last year in an eBay auction. The remaining tape I have would be Fighter's Edge.

I'll say nothing else till a question gets asked. Enjoy.

Happy Birthday to The Game Informant!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You can already tell by previous posts, but I'm a big fan of Resident Evil. Classic Resident Evil if you may and Resident Evil 2 is among one of my favorite Capcom games and probably one of the very few in the franchise that actually leaves a good, thrilling impression on me as a player today. Its infamous first draft and highly publicized revisions have also earned itself the reputation of being one of the most high-profile games in the subject of prototype and unreleased video game content today.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

So for the night before this year's Halloween, we'll briefly go over a video I published nearly four years ago that details two unique similar music pieces hidden in the sound code for Resident Evil 2 that can't be heard normally in the game. The music pieces sound as though they are actually variations (which I decided to call them) of one another, which you can listen to below on the embedded link.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As we hear in the video, the first variation sounds as though it's a rough mix, as it contains the least instrumentation. The second variation sounds much more refined, containing at least one more instrument playing in the track. Presumably, this would have been the final draft before it would be disused in the game's sound code.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Sometimes, music pieces are composed for specific moments before scenes in a movie, TV show, or game is completed. When a scene is sent to the cutting room floor, usually everything is cut along with the scene. In this case, these particular music tracks were left behind as the scenes had been ditched in favor of the form we got in the final form. How these would have fit in the game remains unknown.

Seeking for answers, I spoke to lead Resident Evil 2 music composer Masami Ueda on Twitter in which he gave the following response:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Two songs are probably, I think it was music for the Sherry. Is what I was composed. QT @OKeijiDragon: @retronauts @GoNintendoTweet

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">— 上田雅美 (@PG_ueda) February 8, 2012

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ueda-san vaguely recalls composing these two tracks for the game, but was able to recall their purpose. They were meant to be a theme for Sherry Birkin, the young girl who accompanies lead female Claire Redfield in their escape from Raccoon City.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The pieces were originally discovered in a PSF zipped folder at Zophar.com, a game emulator and hacking resource website. A PSF. (PlayStation Sound Format) is a sound file that often holds the synthesized sound data in various PlayStation games. Cracking the format required computer hacking and disassembly skills. The individual who originally ripped the tracks from the game's sound directory and uploaded them on to Zopher in the first place is currently unknown. I'd like to thank that individual for finding these bits.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Wanna know what my Halloween treat this year is for you guys? If you're a Resident Evil fan like me, I think you'll like it a lot. Stay tuned.OKeijiDragonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08730604118342212926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779779496041480669.post-18714517456200463232015-08-30T21:00:00.000-07:002015-08-30T21:00:34.434-07:00Here's a random proto track and an newly-ripped E3 trailer (@60FPS) from Mega Man X5Three months!? Gosh, I've been out for a while.

I've been in the mood for prototype/unreleased games again lately. This time, I've taken a listening to a track I've ripped and uploaded on YouTube a year ago, from a prototype version of Mega Man X5 dated May 1, 2000.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The biggest difference to note about this track is in the middle. The first fifty seconds are consistent to the final version, but after that the main verse (or bridge, whatever's the right term for it) becomes different. If you ask me, this version emits the vastness of space much more than the final one (though the stage actually takes place in a planetarium, surprise suprise). Out of all the tracks in the proto, this one is my favorite.

The prototype itself contains a large number of rudimentary elements indicative of its progression into it's final form, all of which you can find them documented at the Cutting Room Floor. The US preview trailer, unveiled at E3 2000 convention in Los Angeles, CA that year, appears to be from this build of the game.

If you want to see the whole VHS rip in it's entirety, you can find it here and reminisce about the old days when Mega Man (and Capcom) was a bigger brand than it is today. OKeijiDragonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08730604118342212926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779779496041480669.post-79259001493176979912015-05-25T23:35:00.000-07:002015-05-27T11:09:11.028-07:00Song Similarities #1: Sonic CD and Slam Dunk

Ever watch a show or a movie and notice a song in the background you thought sounded remarkably familiar to another song you've heard elsewhere before? I have. Which is why I made the unoriginally-titled Song Similarities. I'm sorry.

Inspired by the Sonic Retro forum's "This Song Sounds Like X" thread, I've began making a short clip, of hopefully several to come, that highlights interesting similarities between a pair of songs that strike me as strong coincidences that particularly resonate with me.

Now, one thing Id like to note. I'm not trying to persuading my audience that "OMG (insert artist) must have done music for (insert IP), this is like MJ/Sonic 3 all over again!" I am just simply creating these videos of what I find are trivially interesting that I nonetheless feel would be worthy of bringing up

In a time when Street Fighter and Mega Man where the biggest names in Capcom's arsenal of video games in the early 1990s, 3D polygonal games had just begun to be a thing and polygons consisted mostly of origami figures that resembled moving pyramids and stationary chunks of sausage blocks, figuratively speaking. BIO HAZARD, or as commoners call it Resident Evil, would become the company's first bold experiment working with 3D polygons that would pay off in a major way.

Let's set the clock back to late summer of 1995. The PlayStation was already less than a year old in Japan, while BIO HAZARD had been in development for some time already. At this point in time, the game had just moved on from its "co-op" experimentation period (which not much is known about, and if I can even say it was co-op, actually) and into the period where survival was mandatory and isolation horror would shape up the final form it would assume.

This footage has been around for a long time now and in fact some of you might even recall seeing it on Inflames' website or other familiar locale. For the purpose of preservation (and because I can't stand the quality of the original rip anyways), I've once again taken upon myself to purchase the original VHS source to bring to you remastered footage of the segment in 1080p60.

So the narrative is set in the near-future (for the time of the game's release) of 1998 at the northwest side of the United States where S.T.A.R.S, a police force stationed at Raccoon City, is called in to investigate a series of bizarre murders committed in the outskirts of their city. Upon receiving no word from Bravo team, the team that was initially dispatched the previous evening to find any clues to intercept the supposed killers at the Arklay Mountains, Alpha team arrives swiftly to locate their missing members.

So onto the prototypical context of the footage itself. First off, only a handful of areas of the first floor mansion are actually playable and the camera positions in some of these areas are drastically different. For example, in one angle, the camera appropriated to the first floor door leading to the first zombie is positioned behind the banister from the second floor (which I find the angle itself interesting, actually).

Jill Valentine is stands at the front stairs on the first floor of the mansion. She doesn't say much other than "I'll stand watch here." Nothing else. Interestingly, despite her presence in this prototype, Jill isn't actually seen in the embedded footage above. My guess is that in between the aforementioned previous prototype version and the leaked August 4th prototype, her model had just been redone from her previous, implemented design. But that would mean that there had to have been a build of that that existed at some point.

One of the elements I find more interesting is the lack of a finalized set of voice samples for Chris, possibly in Japanese. Presumably, this build was created at a time when the game was still planned to feature Japanese language performances. There's even a set for Jill as well. Take a sample (for more, check out the prototype's page that I sometimes update at The Cutting Room Floor):

Aside of that, and a snake that shows up from almost out of nowhere at the exit to the garden, there's not much else in the build that provides more of the game than the later protos exhibit. Beyond this prototype, there are at least two more other prototypes (three if you include the Trial Edition) that proceed the progress of the game's development. For now however, the focus is just for this build only. Sometime in the future, I'd like to explore those other builds. If there is a prototype of this game that you'd like for me to explore and document in detail, I'd be happy to.

I'm more motivated to start and complete projects based on the level of demand for their release, and in fact I've invited YouTube users to like this comment I've made about remaking a video about the Japanese dialogue that never materialized in the final game.

Anyways, one of the best ways of preserving and observing video game prototypical media is collecting footage of them in action on game catalog tapes.

Sega Video Magazine is a good place to start. They're a series of game catalog VHS tapes distributed in Japan by Sega Enterprises that promoted and centered exclusively around Sega's own games and games from other publishers during the Mega Drive and Sega Saturn eras. A lot of these tapes have footage of games that haven't taken their final forms yet, which oftentimes can exhibit strong, interesting differences in the content from the final releases. The spectrum of this can range from minor to extreme.

NiGHTS into Dreams... doesn't really fall on either side, but lies more in the left-side of the middle. The clip below covers the world unveiling of the game that took place inside the Tokyo Prince Hotel on March 27, 1996 in Japan. Following that segment is an on-screen interview with some of the then-most respected developers at Sonic Team within Sega, who were also responsible for Sonic's greatest games ever. Producer and main programmer Yuji Naka, director Naoto Oshima, and co-game designer Takashi Iizuka take screen time to tell us their stories as to how the beginning of development came about. Unsubbed.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Scattered throughout the interview is footage of the game in it's early stages of development, including the first level Spring Valley that has a different level and object layout. Many of the sound effects differentiate from the final and even the music sounds unrefined, particularly The Dragon Made a Loud Scream. Turn on the video annotations and it'll elaborate the specifics to you.

I've said this many times already but Nico Nico Douga is quite the treasure trove of Japanese gaming history, featuring various promotional videos of various games spanning several decades starting from the 80s. I remember that Super Mario Bros. 3 video that was a big hit with proto enthusiasts in 2011 after it was found on NND. Hopefully, someone will be kind and interested to provide a translation of the interview above.OKeijiDragonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08730604118342212926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779779496041480669.post-56670018838227460252015-04-02T22:50:00.000-07:002015-05-12T12:43:31.453-07:00Rockman Neo [Mega Man Legends demo] Analysis Video (With Annotations)<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">(Originally published at the now-defunct DASH Republic and Tumblr in 2013. At a time when the third dimension was taking over the gaming landscape in the mid-1990s with 3D polygonal-based consoles, 2D-native characters of previous generations were making the leap to 3D, often to mixed results. Franchises like Super Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy made the jump to 3D and closely followed their 2D gameplay concepts. Mega Man's transition wasn't familiar.
Ah, hell nah. This was Mega Man Legends. You explored inside abandoned ancient dungeons. You shot at creepy bloodthirsty robots that live in said dungeons. You talked to goddamn talking monkeys and legomen. You live in an airship that crash lands on an island that becomes invaded by pirates who gave you psuedo-Team Rocket vibes. You fought a vaguely effeminate, psychopathic cyborg that wants to invoke a skynet-like apocalypse on humans that aren't even humans but "Carbons." So you have these awesome concepts that don't fit into the traditional Mega Man formula and yet it identifies itself as such. The first was a proto of Mega Man X5, the third being a "late"-English localization build of The Misadventures of Tron Bonne circa months before it's North American release, and the second in-between...

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">...an English debug prototype of Mega Man Legends 2, dated July 12, 2000. This was by far, surprisingly, the most interesting of the three Mega Man prototypes that Protodude shared to me behind closed doors. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I held onto this for a while before it was leaked onto the net, mostly due to video production reasons and to start writing a page for this at the The Cutting Room Floor.

So wait, wait, wait. What exactly does "debug" mean? What is it for and why should we care about this, aside of serving as a view of the game's development?

So (to my understanding) debugging basically means to look for bugs, meaning any defects, in the whole game's programing and fixing them all of them as much as possible. This particular debugging prototype was used to assess the programming of the game during Rockman DASH 2's localization process into Mega Man Legends 2.

Stuff like this, you gotta fix.

This means actually going over everything in the game from the English text being written and displayed on-screen, to the game's textures, collision, camera, and basically everything else you can think of. When you bring a game over from Japan, you have to go over and refine everything (and maybe even change some things) to make it a marketable, commercial product to another audience. And to do all that, you, the developer or programmer, need to have some handy debugging tools to do your job right and make the literal endgame fun and playable.

In that clip-show video I have above, I show all the bizarre shit you could ever do with the various in-game debug functions this prototype offers. You can access a level select, arm yourself with the ability to enable yourself with every single item and weapon in the game, in-game camera manipulation, and so forth. All spoken dialogue in the proto is in Japanese, making this a sort-of "undub" version for those who wish to experience this great game in its original Japanese performances.

My favorite debug function would have to be the ability to manipulate the game's camera in any moment of the game. I spent so much time taking fun screenshots while recording footage for the YouTube video above. I did this with the game's debug's Event Camera function. Photography is an acquired hobby of mine and I'd like to think I made neat camera angles.
He appears as a regular playable character exclusively in the Japanese arcade and console versions of the game, but was removed in all the overseas releases despite most of his taunt text being translated into English.
What should be noted however, is that this particular move was actually removed from the final version of the game. In fact, I've only actually just watched the footage below after rendering this clip, as it was a recent request and I had only just decided upon rendering and uploading it yesterday. And with that out of the way, here it is:

Unseen64 has an brief article this particular entry of the series that was planned for PlayStation but was unfortunately canceled in early 1996. Not a whole lot is known about it, let alone why it was canceled, but judging from the V-Jump 1995 footage, TwinBee Miracle was to be an quirky 2D RPG by Konami based on its top-scrolling shooter roots with colorful characters to meet and some cartoony worlds to explore. It does look like an RPG I would have played.

Its always too bad to see games that seem to have great potential get canceled. Not to be too off-topic but the greatest gaming tragedy I can think of off the top of my head is Star Fox 2, the sequel to the SNES Super FX megahit of the same name. Thankfully, there are prototypes of that game out in the wild internet for everyone to play and see for themselves the marvel that game is. I'm glad to have made some videos out of it too. Hopefully, we'll see a build of Miracle in the future.OKeijiDragonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08730604118342212926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779779496041480669.post-29805672860652939762015-01-14T21:13:00.000-08:002015-01-14T21:13:17.141-08:00Buried Game Treasure: Next Generation Magazine CDs<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">(Originally published on 1UP.com and Tumblr. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Remember those times when you bought a shrink-wrapped magazine from a supermarket or a bookstore, and you got a free disc of cool stuff inside them? Back then, the internet was this underdeveloped, yet still awesome tool to find the latest news on anything in general at the time, especially gaming news<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">. Yet, anything through a crappy dial-up connection (remember that too?) would take forever for things — like videos — to finish downloading <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">onto our PCs, so for a lot of us we resorted to these discs that came with image and video previews of upcoming games.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">A few years years ago, I discovered an ISO on my hard drive called the Next Generation - September 1997, an example of disc containing such cool content. These were discs that were distributed in copies of Next Generation Magazine when you bought the magazine at the time. Included in this particular disc were lots of low-quality 320x240 MOV videos of PlayStation, Sega Saturn, & Nintendo 64 games that were featured at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) at Atlantic, Georgia in mid-June of 1997.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I've found many clips of many different games in their prototype forms, including Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Mega Man Neo (Mega Man Legends), and Sonic R, all in their pre-release glory. The following videos have been edited to correct the contrast issues the videos had when it was first produced. They looked terrible (view this comparison: twitpic.com/9d1v6q).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This old early prototype footage of Crash Bandicoot 2 features several differences that indicate how early into production this game was when it was first announced at this convention. The video above features brief annotations that go over said differences, including the original HUD font used from Crash 1, different object placements, etc. There's more footage where that came from too (give it a watch too).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This footage of Sonic R features what appears to be a slightly (don't quote me on that, watch and decide for yourself) stage layout at the end of the stage. Different HUD (this was a common beta trait from those days, wasn't it?), and character icons, camera angles, etc. There might be a better quality version on YouTube somewhere, but I didn't find it until after this video was uploaded then.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Next up, sp,e old prototype footage of one of my closest-to-heart games ever, Mega Man Legends, which was known at the time as Mega Man Neo. Just like the first two, this video includes annotations that accentuates the various rudimentary differences that indicate just how early into production this 3D Mega Man title was when it was first quietly announced at the time. It's amazing seeing how much content and concepts were experimented on this game, it doesn't even strongly resemble the final game know today.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Last but not least, another valuable video I found was an video interview of former CEO of Nintendo of America, Howard Lincoln. Topics discussed in this interview include the Nintendo 64's early performance in the west of that year and their strong relationship with Rareware, the developers of Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Banjo-Kazooie, and GoldenEye 007. You know, really great games.

Backside.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As the internet grew to become the multimedia world it is today, the necessity of CDs packed with videos shrank as sites like YouTube and Google Video took over to allow users, fan communities, and media and game companies to upload videos without worrying about their own bandwidth and file sizes. I remember Nintendo Power coming packed with DVDs of trailers and such, but that was like in 2006 just as YT got around. YouTube and the internet has really made our lives easier.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Before I forget, I can't remember where I found the ISO in the internet originally, but in case the download source is no longer available, here's an ISO of the disc that's now readily available at the Internet Archive.
